Holiday lighting wrapped around tree trunks and branches should be removed after the holiday season is past. At a minimum, lights should checked on annually basis to make sure the electrical wires and other binding have not grown too tight.

A tree will begin to grow around anything wrapped around it, which greatly restricts the movement of water and nutrients necessary for tree growth. Embedded wires can eventually girdle a tree causing severe damage or even killing a tree.
